WB 1.15

Nov 15, 2004 00:33 WB 1.15
Hey Elvis, some things I would like to see in the next version:

1) A "Reset map" function in the ds, to clean sweep the map without dropping anyone or messing up alliances. (would be extremely handy w/ my CTP maps)
2) An LGM stop key. If, say, you sent your LGM out to repair a dead pill, but someone already took it, just hit that key. I know the same thing always comes up: "It's supposed to be a bolo clone", but I just thought this one wouldn't be too bad...
Nov 15, 2004 01:46
#2 is a bad bad bad idea.... if someone sends an lgm, then the enmy starts shooting in its path you kill it, you think it's fair to recall your lgm before he dies?

nay.
Nov 15, 2004 01:49
Whatever. It was my Dad's idea. I thought it was fair. :P
Nov 15, 2004 01:57
I'd much rather see the bugs fixed rather than see more features added.
Nov 15, 2004 02:35
I agree. But from a programming viewpoint, I don't think it would be too hard to implement the first one...

(as if I would know. I know javascript and qbasic. )
Nov 15, 2004 02:59
It's not difficulty that has me wanting more bug fixes than more features. In my understanding, when you're programming a game each component will affect each other. Adding more features can be like going back in and adding more bugs.

it would sure save laying mines and building blocks while messing with the other person's mine and pretending to repair or build
Nov 17, 2004 15:12
If there was to be an LGM Cancel function, it would have to be made as a reasonable disadvantage. For example, stopping the builder in place for a moment giving enemies a chance to target.. But regardless, I don't like the idea. At the last lan party I attended, I played Bolo on a someone's Mac... There are MANY more important things to be changed, like driving halfway through walls or perfectly matching the fire rate and targetting of pillbox fire or something...

Anything that maintains/ensures the long term popularity of winbolo should also be seriously considered. Now that we have amazing games like Halo2 available, bolo may end up being outcompeted.
Nov 17, 2004 16:51
I don't think bolo will be going away anytime soon. For me, part of its glamore is the "simpleness" of it. There are no flashy graphics, items, levels, or maps to be "unlocked", etc. etc. What you see is what you get. Hmmmm, bored? Impossible, the complexity of bolo overwhelms super graphics. Ahh, the SOUND is so simple, yet it gets my heart racing every game (almost as much as Acro in a speedo does). Also, it's very quick to get up and running. Only have 1/2 hour to play: start up bolo.

More importantly than any added LGM functions: Assigning different color for different groups. Lopsided grouping kills more good games than any other factor. Or have a little checkbox at game startup "For alliances all players must agree", which would allow a player to request ONLY one other player, and then everyone else in the game would have to click "Agree" when the request is annouced.
Nov 17, 2004 17:16
OK, forget the LGM controls, all I want is the "Reset map" function. But also, I agree, Winbolo is THE ULTIMATE multi-player game out there. 8) I mean, you have everything you could want in a game: strategy, adrenaline pumping action, thinking, skill, etc. etc. Our youth group has had two winbolo lan parties, and everyone has a blast! :D

Not in the same category, Winbolo will rule 2d multiplayer gaming for a long time, not many fun 2d games out there. Halo 2 is fun, but I still like Winbolo just fine.

Here's how i see it;

people WANT 3-d games... more realistic. So i think if we had a better program to set up games. (automatically before every game has a mini-chatroom (like starcraft ect) where captians are selected (by skill level, probably when something is deisgned so it can retrieve play info from wbn (after account linking is made and padded stats are totally destroyed, to ensure proper rankings/stats) and then told to pick teams the usual way, meanwhile being able to see a players ranking and skill automatically, and tah-dah, 3, 2, 1, GO! and everyone is able to start moving and playing) (btw, sides would be integrated as well) Anyway, that and eventually winbolo 3d for logviewer will be made into part of the actual game, and players who want a more modern look will still have the same advantage as 2-d players because it will have a small radar in a corner somewhere, showing birdseye view in mini.

....and that is that, along with teaching players how to play the game right, which i found was easy if you could watch it played properly, which people will be able to do after logviewer is realeased. until then, wait.

Q-mandabomb, you must have realized by now that WinBolo was not made to cater to people who "WANT 3-D Games". As afore mentioned, WinBolo PWNS the 2-D gaming world, in the world of 3-D games it would be a small competitor and would die out quickly.

what we really need is open source of winbolo! elvis needs to make like linus, so people can make uber versions of the game, and have it constantly updated by a community

wanted updates for winbolo have been addressed countless times in the past. i dont see any point to this thread.

so without further ado, kflawj3yoh8uwae904yuj32nhklrenahirewuy-93yujlkernhk;srdjhopsrahilajuy4klnu,.ermjorasdkj[54iiiiiiiiii-wlkjnh5krtw4two[jhl 5 y43 tki4 848t ik84tuuj4u4 pi934t44te4ouy4 yo4gggggw3u9y 943-u6t9 yjtkejkhlsrdntmg,eqlkIWO#(*U^(HNkr;NHklren er htiehywo4ey4y6i4knuyl4unkreksluhnreuyjeurtsijgsifyoureadthisyouarefuckinglameallkdjahijrsa93i-26oepawjhklnasdkljt392=-yjoerhnalkjsenhglaklsdjahlknganasdblowme

mashing the keyboard is fun!

I can see how open source could hurt and help winbolo. Bugs Swould be fixed faster, but they would also be created faster. More versions of the game would mean network incompatability between versions. Unless a dev team is established, winbolo will probably stay the same as it is now.

I know that there is probably many things wrong with this idea, and it is probably the stupidest thing you guys have heard all year, but maybe... there could be some sort of plugin interface???

I have no idea how it would be implemented or how it would work, however...

I never knew that.

i think that if he changed the allying system .. atleast open games would be better..

instead of being able to ally everyone .. maybe make it so you can only ally 1 person ? therefore if you want to JOIN an alliance.. ally 1 of the members in that alliance.. and if someone new joins, basically they would have to pick the 1 person who they would ask to join alliance.

tooo many times games have been ruined cuz players (not only noobs) ally everyone just cause it may be funny, or whatever.

ontop of that, maybe add a feature such as : if you are in an alliance, you can still ally ? so say some alliance has 4 people, one has 3 people, and the other has 2 people will all pills..

one of the players from the team with 4 would ally a member of the team of 3, and if accepted, they would form a full alliance of 7.

just a thought, if that makes any sense to anyone.. it is getting late...

heh, I know this was posted a few months ago but I thought I'd respond to it. Considering that I haven't heard of BM playing lately, maybe he got tired of it by now? I can count on only one of my hand all of the players who were playing winbolo 2 years ago who still play regularly.

Personally, after having experienced a little of Civ3, I think the next evolution that would be helpfull in winbolo is to allow users to modify the ruleset. And yeah, I agree with UD, it'd be nice to have an opensource winbolo. But then it's like the chicken and egg situation - to have an open source winbolo game, all it takes is a few people (outside of Elvis) getting together and programming it. However, in all the talk I've seen, it has never been even attempted, and Elvis seems to be the only one who is interested in programming a winbolo client. Bleh.

instead of having a bitch-fest about who going to ally who in games, why not have a ramdom button that auto pick the teams.
Jan 11, 2005 18:08
thats another idea.. needs to be tweeked a bit.. but yes.. another idea.

kinda weird, in bolo it was easy to set teams as we would just play 3 games with all different set of teams possible. Also, there wasn't any of this automatic ranking, so people weren't used to being that anal about losing or winning games.

However you are right Indiana, the selection of teams in winbolo takes way too long and is way too frustrating right now.

yes fireice.. that is cuz of morons who whine and cry saying.. THOSE TEAMS AREN"T FAIR>. BLAH BLAH BULLSHIT.. also.. please .. dont exclude yourself from that list of players.

Agreed, I can be anal about teams too.

i know this idea has been done to death. but, maybe in the next verson 1.16 or maybe this verson if it not to late, try to make winboloer can play boloer and boloer can play winboloer. im sure it would be hard. because bolo and winbolo are a bit differnt in terms of pills getting hit, lgm, etc, etc but. why not have a "winbolo/bolo" game that has nothing to do with the versons. just make one solid winbolo/bolo game so winboloer can play boloer. like, i really don't think boloer care enough if the pills are differnt, or lgm are differnt. or if we care enough if we need to change winbolo's pills or lgms, etc, etc. i think they are care about new people. keeping bolo alive. and it would be nice to play the people who first played this great game. maybe teach some of these soo called "gods" of winbolo a thing or two.
