Yes, it's true--the 3 in "Easter Island III" really DOES signify
something, heh..

Easter Island III is actually the third map I made employing the
whimsical-never-stops-being-funny Easter Island theme. And now, two
years after I made the last one, they're now all in the official
archive, heh.. While I don't expect them to threaten Easter Island III
in popularity (let alone CT3, hehe), they're now finally all available
for your perusal.

For the curious, here are some notes:

"Easter Island" itself is included largely for historical curiosity...
Back in the spring of 1993 I came up with the stupid idea that what Bolo
desperately needed was a map that incorporated little heads that were
supposed to look like the statues on Easter Island, and have clung to it
ever since. "Easter Island" was made when Appletalk was all there was
and my Bolo universe was restricted to the campus network at the fine
College of Wooster... The map reflects its origins pretty plainly--it's
a large, distinctly non-symmetrical terrain-style map with lots of
rivers and forests. I haven't played it in years, but I thought it was
an amusing commentary on how Bolo has changed over time.

The Easter Island theme that everyone is familiar with is actually the
product of the last real snow that we had in central North Carolina in
January of 1996. While 6 inches of snow didn't really slow down Mr.
Rustbelt much, the Southern locals decided it would be a good idea to
close down the computer labs at UNC due to lack of staffing, leaving
yours truly without his Bolo fix. Thus I turned to map making for a
couple days. Easter Island II (which I ultimately decided was nothing
special and never played) began life as Chew Toy 2 or 3, I believe, and
evolved from there into Easter Island III. I began playing on EI3
shortly thereafter, but never did submit it to the archive--it was only
a year or so ago that Wharfie finally made an 'official' copy which
corrected the weird rubble in the sw and eliminated the misshapen start
which could be walled in. Before that I assume that it just spread from
person to person, heh...

Easter Island Gothic and Easter Island Jihad emerged in similar fashion
to EI2/3--they're knockoffs of one of the Gothic Industrial maps (can't
remember which one) and Bolo Jihad respectively, which were still
frequently played when I made them. I don't think they're really much
different from the originals, since the main difference is the
replacement of walls in the original with Easter heads.

The other numbered EI maps, made during the spring of 1996, are all
close variations on EI3... Most of the changes were designed to change
initial movement patterns from the original (easy to move E/W off the
start, but difficult to move N/S) by placing pills slightly
differently. I eventually decided that this was not really that
compelling a project and never really played these maps, but I decided
what the hell, I might as well finally throw them out there for people
to see.

Enjoy,
Black Flag
